Reasons Behind Suspension Noise in Your Car

Car Suspension

We’ve all heard it. Driving along with windows down, catching the breeze, tapping fingers to some tunes….

A car pulls up next to you at the light.. A screeching noise assaults your ears–and it’s not because the car slammed on his brakes. Poor guy–he’s got problems. But what happens when it’s your car making that noise?

Annoying noises from your vehicle can be more than just annoying. They’re the warning sounds that let you know something, somewhere needs your attention. So just what are the noises you might hear and what in your car’s suspension might be causing them?

Parts of the Suspension

First, let’s take a look at what your suspension system does for your vehicle. The basic function of the suspension system is to keep your vehicle in contact with the road and absorb shock and vibrations motions created by traveling over the road. The suspension system is a complex interaction of parts.

Springs compensate for bumps and ruts in the road. They also keep your vehicle at a constant height off the ground and absorb extra weight. There are 3 types of springs on most vehicles:

○ Coil springs
○ Leaf springs
○ Torsion bars
○ Trucks, buses, and luxury vehicles may have air springs.

Dampers help to control the bouncing action of the springs. Types of dampers are:

○ Shock absorber
○ Suspension struts
○ Anti-sway bars

Last but not least, axles and tires provide the ability for the car to move smoothly

Suspension Damage

Beginning with your tires, your vehicle’s suspension system takes the brunt of every adverse element on the roads you drive. Constant exposure to ruts, curbs, and even just everyday, event-free driving, causes wear and tear on the multiple moving parts of your suspension system, regardless of the type of suspension you have.

So what type of noises does a suspension system make when it wants your attention?

● A rubbing or rumbling noise can indicate a problem with your tires. Common tire problems such as low or uneven pressure are easy to diagnose and address. If the noise continues, however, you may have a problem requiring professional help—a worn wheel bearing or uneven alignment. Tire problems need to be dealt with as soon as possible to avoid causing more extensive damage to the suspension system.

● Another common noise is a clunking or knocking sound. This sound can be caused by worn out shocks absorbers. Once shocks become worn, the coil springs tend to bang against the chassis of the vehicle in motion. Other causes of clunking or knocking can be struts or ball joints, which may be worn and need replacing.

Clicking or rattling noises indicate worn parts. Even parts touted as being good “for life” become worn eventually and require attention. A clicking sound, especially when making tight turns, can indicate a worn CV joint.

● Probably the most common suspension system warning noise is squeaking. Your vehicle suspension system has a large number and type of joints, each of which needs to be kept adequately lubricated in order to extend life and maximize function. Ball joints have a rubber boot containing lubricant. Over time, the boot can become worn or torn, causing the metal ball to rub against the metal of the cup part of the joint. Worn, dried out, or damaged bushings are another cause of squeaking suspension.

Having a noisy car isn’t fun, but it can also be dangerous. No matter what noises your vehicle is making underneath, you need to check it out. Not following up on warning noises can lead to unsafe driving and further damage to your suspension system.
