Mercedes-Benz is known for being luxurious and reliable while providing drivers and passengers with a comfortable ride. Regular maintenance is critical for keeping any car running, and this goes for Mercedes as well. A common issue that we see with Mercedes is mass airflow sensor failure.

The Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor

The Mass Airflow sensor is also known as a MAF sensor. Its role in your Mercedes is to measure air density in the engine. This information is critical for maintaining the appropriate air-to-fuel ratio.

When the mass flow sensor is working correctly, it detects the amount of air entering the engine. The data collected is then transmitted to the Mercedes computer. The computer is able to regulate the amount of fuel needed.

When your engine is not running with the proper air-to-fuel ratio, you will experience poor fuel economy, a decrease in power, and rough idling. Your car may also stall.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Mass Airflow Sensor

Over time, the mass airflow sensor can fail or get soiled. A MAF sensor that is soiled, old, or improperly installed can allow debris to enter the engine. This can lead to engine damage. A faulty mass airflow sensor cannot provide the computer with the correct readings. This can make you Mercedes act erratically.

Below are some of the most common symptoms of mass airflow sensor failure:

Hesitation

Your Mercedes should accelerate as soon as you press on the gas pedal. If there is hesitation, your engine is not getting a steady flow of gasoline. This can be caused by a bad mass air flow sensor. Hesitation can lead to accidents since you are not able to move your car out of the way fast enough.

Poor Fuel Economy

You may notice a drastic reduction in your fuel economy if there is an issue with the MAF sensor. Filling up your gas tank more often is a sign that there is a problem. Watching your fuel mileage can also help you catch issues early.

Loss of Power

Your Mercedes is a powerful vehicle. A loss of power is a sign that you are experiencing an issue. When the sensor is not providing the computer with correct data, the engine cannot generate enough power.

Stalling

A faulty airflow sensor can lead to stalling. It often happens after the vehicle has been running for a few minutes. The sensor often provides the correct data in the beginning, but once the car heats up, the readings become erratic.

Jerking or Hiccupping

Erratic data can cause jerking and/or hiccupping during acceleration.

Engine is Hard to Start

Your Mercedes should start immediately. A defective mass airflow sensor can be providing the wrong data. When this happens, your spark plugs will not receive the correct air-to-fuel ratio.

Rich or Lean Idling

When the MAF sensor is not providing the correct data, the engine could be getting too much gas or not enough. When your Mercedes is not getting enough gas, it is known as lean idling. If there is too much, it is known as rich idling.

Black Smoke from Exhaust

When your engine is running rich, the exhaust may produce black smoke. The excess fuel is not able to be burned correctly. Instead, it is released with carbon dioxide and water vapors. This mixture is released out of the exhaust as smoke.

Is it safe to drive with a bad MAF sensor?

You can continue to drive your vehicle with a bad mass airflow sensor. However, we do not recommend that you do so. Stalling and hesitation can be dangerous and lead to an accident. Continuing to drive can also lead to serious engine damage and costly repairs.

The mass airflow sensor is a necessary component in your Mercedes. To avoid complete failure and expensive repairs, come see us as soon as you begin to experience any issues.
