Volkswagen Keyless Entry Failure

As the years go on, we develop new and more efficient ways to make little things in our lives easier. Technology seems to evolve in a way that allows for convenience and minimal effort, and as we continue to grow as a society, we will see many more advancements. That being said, those advancements are not always infallible.

While it may be more efficient to have the use of keyless entry to your Volkswagen, that doesn’t necessarily mean your keyless fob will be cooperative. This isn’t a problem that impedes the use of your vehicle, but it can be downright annoying. We’ve become very used to our everyday conveniences and to have them fail can be bothersome. Let’s look at what to do if your keyless entry fails.

Causes of Keyless Entry Failure

While you may be able to chalk up a keyless entry failure to a bad battery, it could also signify a deeper issue with your car. It is important to have the right diagnosis about what is causing the failure so you know if it is time to visit the repair shop. Consider these possibilities of what might be causing the issue.

Check or Replace Key Fob Battery

It is highly likely your keyless entry issues stem from a dead battery inside of the key fob. This is something you can either replace yourself or ask a mechanic or even the dealership to replace. Replacing a battery in a key fob is typically inexpensive or even free if the battery is the only issue.

Check for Broken Contacts or Buttons Inside the Fob

If replacing the battery didn’t work, it is possible there is a broken piece inside of the fob itself or one of the buttons is damaged. These aren’t too difficult to pry open and check, as the broken pieces will likely be obvious.

Try the Backup Remote

Most vehicles come with two remotes, the main remote and the backup. If your main remote isn’t working, try your back up remote to see if it fails as well. If it does, you can likely rule out an issue with both remotes and look elsewhere for the core problem.

Reprogram or Replace the Fob

Reprogramming the fob is typically something the dealership or a knowledgeable shop can do for you easily. Some will do it for free. Replacement of the fob can help if there is a short in your remote’s system or if there is some sort of corrosion. Typically, this cost will be a bit more than reprogramming but is still not expensive to replace the fob itself.

Other Factors than the Keyless Entry Fob

If you noticed when testing both your main fob and your backup fob that neither of them worked, and you have also replaced the batteries in both, you may be looking at a more serious problem. If the key fob isn’t the problem, then it is likely something electrical or mechanical in your vehicle’s lock and security system. It will require inspection and diagnosis by a professional mechanic. It is better to speak to a trained technician who is familiar with your VW’s intricate electrical parts and components.
