Important Dash Board Lights In a Mercedes

Mercedes Dash Board Warning Lights

Posted on September 13, 2019 by Amy

Dashboards provide a wealth of information to the driver about the car and how it is operating. Thanks to internal sensors and small indicator lights, many of the manual processes that were once required to check the status of something under the hood or in the car can now be seen right on the dashboard. The list below contains some of the more common and also more important dashboard warning lights in a Mercedes.

ABS Light

ABS stands for anti-lock brake system. This light lets you know when the anti-lock brake system is engaged. This means that the vehicle is braking the car for you and attempting to prevent the car from slipping and sliding. The ABS light and traction control lights often come on together because the two systems work together to stabilize the vehicle.

Battery Light

The battery light usually indicates that there is a problem charging the battery. This is often the result of a bad alternator belt but can be caused by a bad alternator. You should get your car to the automotive service center as soon as possible, before your battery loses all power and your car dies.

Brake Light

This indicator light alerts you that your brake pads need to be replaced. The sensor reads the level of wear on the existing brake pads.

Check Engine Light

This light can come on for a variety of reasons including, low oil pressure, engine temperature too high, fuel filter problems, spark plug problems, and others. In some vehicles, the check engine light is color-coded. A red light means pull over and check your engine right away; it is not safe to continue driving your car. A yellow light means you need to check your engine as soon as you can, but you can drive it to your short-term destination and check it then.

Coolant Light

This indicator will let you know when you are low on coolant. It will also let you know if your car temperature is running over 200 degrees. Do not drive your car if it is overheating. You can permanently damage the engine.

DEF/AdBlue Indicator

DEF stands for diesel exhaust fluid. AdBlue is a brand name for one of the DEF products. Generally, when the DEF supply is at 10% the indicator will come on, at 5% the light will typically flash. And if the DEF reservoir is below 2.5% a solid amber light will come on. And if the reservoir is empty, the light will turn red, and the truck will be limited to 5 mph until the DEF reservoir is refilled.  DEF is an additive to the exhaust that reduces noxious fumes from being released into the environment. DEF never comes in contact with the fuel.

Glow Plug

For vehicles that run on diesel fuel, the engine cylinders need to be heated to operate efficiently in cold weather. This coil-shaped indicator light lets the driver know that the cylinders are being heated before starting the engine. The glow plug indicator light will flash if there is a problem with the glow plug.

Steering Wheel

This light is indicating that the power steering system is not working properly. It will be harder to steer the car, which can make driving unsafe.

Tire Pressure Light

The tire pressure sensor reads the tire pressure. When the light comes on, it is an indicator that at least one of the tires has low pressure. Getting this fixed right away will help prevent unsafe driving conditions.

Traction Control Light

This might also be called the ESC or ESP light. The traction control light comes on when the car’s traction control system is engaging. The traction control system will transfer power to other tires when traction is being lost in one of the other tires. This helps keep the automobile under control and on the road.
